To retain their title as the biggest Android Smartphone producers in the world, Samsung launched another ‘masterpiece’ in her flagship Galaxy Lineup of phones — the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.
These devices break away from the shadows of their predecessors in almost all departments.
SOFTWARE, DESIGN, DISPLAY
The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus are both dual-SIM (hybrid) Android devices running on the Nougat flavor (version 7) of the operating system right out of the box.
In terms of build and design overall, both devices are stunning.
Featuring glass panels covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 both in front and behind, the Galaxy S8 and S8 plus are both dust and water resistant (IP68 certified) and can be picked up in an array of colors.
They both possess Super-AMOLED Touchscreens have a quad-HD resolution (1440 x 2960 pixels) but are of varying sizes.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display (568 PPI) while the Galaxy S8+ has a 6.2-inch display, both of which are ‘Always-on’.
PERFORMANCE, HARDWARE, CAMERAS
Under the hood of both devices sit an Octa-core CPU (Exynos 8895 — MEA) which comprises two quad-core clusters having different clock speeds. Cluster 1 is clocked at 2.3 GHz while the other at 1.7 GHz. That and the Mali-G71 MP20 GPU for handling graphics.
For memory, the Galaxy S8 has 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of onboard storage while the S8 Plus comes in two configurations — one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB ROM, and another with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM.
The memory of both devices, however, can be expanded even further by means of a microSD card which upon insertion consumes one of the SIM slots.
For self-shots and video calls, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus have an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter having an aperture width of f/1.7. Asides the large aperture, the camera has autofocus, Auto HDR, and the ability to shoot 1440p video at 30 frames per second.
The primary camera of both devices, on the other hand, is a 12-megapixel lens with the same f/1.7 aperture but supports Phase detection autofocus, Optical Image Stabilization, and 4k video shots at 30 frames per second.
For security, the S8 and S8+ feature both Iris Scanning and Fingerprint reading technologies.
Finally, the battery within the Galaxy S8 is a non-removable 3000 mAh Li-Ion battery while that within the S8 plus is also non-removable, but a bit larger (3500 mAh) and they both can be juiced up pretty quickly.
