Maritime union demand payment for defunct NNSL retirees

MARITIME Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the immediate payment of monthly pension to seafarers retired as a result of the liquidation of the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line, NNSL, in line with the ruling of the Nigerian Industrial Court, NIC.

President-General of MWUN, Adewale Adeyanju, who spoke in Lagos at the union’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting, lamented that affected former workers of NNSL suffered untold hardship as a result of non-payment of their benefits since 1995.

According to him, “you are all aware that the Nigerian Shipping Line was liquidated some decades back which led to the loss of jobs of some seafarers, who were then abandoned to their fate. We call on the Federal Government to do all it can to resuscitate the Nigerian National Shipping Line.

‘‘We also urge government to commence payment of monthly pension to the seafarers who were retired as a result of the liquidation of the defunct Nigerian National Shipping Line in line with the ruling of the Nigerian Industrial Court.

Corroborating the President-General, the NEC in a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting called on the Federal Government to direct NIMASA to commence payment of monthly pension to the seafarers, that were exited from source in 1995 as a result of the liquidation of the defunct Nigeria National Shipping Line.”
