Hopeful twitch: Equity investors applaud 0.06% New Year Market Growth

The Nigerian All Share Index (NSEASI) nudged 0.06 percent higher on Tuesday, being, the first trading session of the year, closing at 38,264.79 point, as against the 38,243.79 point it closed on the 29th of December 2017.

The inaugural trading activities on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) saw the bourse advanced by N8billion in market capitalization, which previously stood at N13.609trillion and closed at N13.617trillion at the close of the market on Tuesday 2nd of January 2018.

Although the market commenced the four-day trading week rather flaccid, as we saw major decline in terms of volume and value traded, but it looks more a promising status quo that the year did not kick off on a bearish note.

The volumes of share traded dropped 55.72 percent to 248,553,332 billion, when compared with the 561,273,352 billion traded the previous session.

The value of shares traded also declined 74.12 percent from N6. 894billion to N1. 784billion in the corresponding trading sessions.

The above transactions transpired in 3,035 deals against the previous 2,722 deals representing 11.50 percent corresponding growth.

 

Market Breadth

 

The market breadth ended positive, as 27 of the 52 stocks traded within the session under review gained and closed in green, while 13 stocks closed in red and 12 others unchanged.

FCMB topped the percentage gainers list adding N0.10kobo, to close at N1.58, 6.76 percent above the previous closing price per share; CAP Plc in succession gained N1.7, to close at N35.7, 5 percent above the previous closing price per share and AFRIPUD gained 21kobo to close at N4.43, 4.98 percent above the previous closing price per share.

On the percentage losers list is NEM Insurance , which lost 4.82 percent, to close at N1.58, from the previous N1.66, ETI also lost 4.29percent to close at N16.27 as against N17 it previously closed, while OMOLUABImfb closed at 72kobo, 4percent lower than the previous 75kobo.
