How can health care delivery be improved in Nigeria?

There are a lot of factors that need to be addressed for a better healthcare delivery in Nigeria, and one of the major factors is provision of adequate healthcare apparatus. The government should put in place enough instruments for effective healthcare service as population increases. This increase in the health care instrument should be followed with more hospitals and healthcare centers with well-trained seasoned medical experts. This will in no small measure reduce the mortality rate in the country.

The use of computer application in dealing with health issues should be included in our course curriculum. Also, entrepreneurship should be taught to stimulate students to various business ideas in health sector.

What are your expectations from your institution?

I’m expecting my institution to work more on accreditations of courses so that students will have more opportunities. For instance students should be able to go for NYSC after completion of their HND program. Also I’m expecting the institution to have more doctors as lecturers; this is a medical institution that deals with life.

How can health care delivery be improved in Nigeria?

To understand how healthcare delivery can be improved in Nigeria, we must first have an idea of some of the problems facing the health care industry. Some of these include: ° inadequate surveillance of the healthcare system to check its effectiveness, disharmony among health care professionals and poor primary health care delivery in rural areas.  To improve health care delivery in Nigeria, we need to ensure we have well-trained and adequately paid workforce. Our health facilities should be well maintained. We also need to put in place logistics to deliver quality medicines with recent technologies. In addition, there is a need for harmony and spirit of teamwork in the healthcare industry. No one needs to feel superior to another. The journey to excellent healthcare is easier when we all work together. It is very possible for the quality of healthcare in Nigeria to be topnotch; it would only require consistent effort and team work.

The healthcare industry is one that plays a key role in the economy of many developed nations. There is a goldmine of business opportunities in the healthcare sector. Some business ideas include: drug manufacturing, wellness coaching, production of herbal products, and sales of medical books.

What do you think should be included in your course curriculum?

My course of study is Chiropractic Medicine and basically the course curriculum included almost all aspects of general medicine and therapeutics. The curriculum was very loaded theoretically but not as much practically as is the case in most Nigerian tertiary institutions. There should be more of practical experience than its theoretical aspect which I believe is going to affect the economy positively.

What are your expectations from your institution?

The college trains healthcare professionals who would go into the health sector and handle lives. These professionals need to undergo expert and modern training and that’s where the lecturers come in. How do you ascertain that the lecturers are abreast with the ever-changing trends? That’s where the importance of conducting competence tests becomes a necessity for trainers of health-related courses.

How can health care delivery be improved in Nigeria?

Health care delivery would be more effective than how it is currently in Nigeria if the health sector can run an “e-health” system whereby patients wouldn’t have to wait long hours to be attended to. Health records of patient should be computer based rather than the traditional paper method; this will enable easy follow up the health records of people at the local, state and National level. Also the government needs to employ more health care professionals who are computer literates to compliment the large and rising population in order to meet up demands.

What are the business opportunities that can be leveraged on in the healthcare sector?

Some of the business that can be leveraged on in health sectors are sales of laboratory/hospital equipment, establishment of private labs, wastes sorting and recycling.

Udoh Dorathy (LASC0HET)

How can health care delivery be improved in Nigeria?

The government should embark on the building of more specialist hospitals, primary health care centers and teaching hospitals. Computerization of Operations is essential; the waiting time between when a patient arrives in our public hospitals to when they are treated is unacceptable. If our hospitals are computerized, inputting, and retrieving patient details will be faster. If the hospitals are computerized, this will make public hospitals more efficient and help them treat more patients with less time. When this happens, both the patients and the doctors gain. Also, there should be provision of modern equipment in the health sector In order to meet up to standards.

What are the business opportunities in the healthcare sector?

Medical waste recycling is a business opportunity. The health care industry produces a lot of wastes which can be recycled into a raw material or reusable product. So starting a medical waste recycling business is a nice idea of consideration as a lot of profit can be made from it. Distributorship of Pharmaceutical products is another opportunity one can leverage on. Home healthcare business is another business to consider. It involves provision of skilled nursing services, home health aides, and other home care services.

What do you think should be included in your course curriculum?

A comprehensive environmental science program should be included in our curriculum in order to expose us to more of what should be known in the Environment and to maintain sustainable stability of safe environment.

What are your expectations from your institution?

My expectation is that my institution should become the best college of health in West Africa, producing excellent student and having basic health technology.
