Our Independence, Our Freedom

Catherine Tamara Oyewole

There is a call to freedom, a cry for our total independence, giving hope to generations to come.

It is time we wake up to a new dawn, a new reality that brings about “One Nigeria”

I took my time last week to meditate on the first verse of the National Anthem;

Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey

To serve our fatherland

With love and strength and faith

The labor of our heroes past

Shall never be in vain

To serve with heart and might

One nation bound in freedom, peace, and unity.

Arise fellow Nigerians and let us build our Nation. Let us solidify our walls, till they become too strong for oppositions. Enough of birthing stars who become strangers in their Fatherland.

Enough of raising stars whose talents are used to build other Nations, leaving Nigeria in ruins. Enough of denying our culture, our lifestyle, our people, our heritage, our pride. Enough of waiting for things to change when we should be the channel of change. Enough of feeling inadequate around those who do not have, or possess all the resources we are blessed with. Enough of waiting for a saviour to bring about the change we desire. You can be that Saviour! Enough of waiting for our generation to fade away without leaving a legacy for those yet unborn.

It’s time to serve!

Every service given to a just course, is never wasted. Most of us attain positions to be served, instead of seeing it as an opportunity to serve. Every position you attain in life is not a time to relax, but a time for more service with love, strength and Faith. Love that reminds you not to harm a fellow Nigerian, but guides you to protecting our one large family. Strength that propels you to always do what is right to salvage our society. Faith in “One Nigeria”. Faith that brings about restoration.

Be a true Nigerian

Remember the sacrifices of our past leaders. They gave their totality so we could one day walk as freemen.

Remember it’s our land

Remember you can never make impact in a society you are not proud to be part of. Stop running. It is time to stay!

Remember every sacrifice sowed, gives your loved ones a better tomorrow.

Our success is not embedded in our words, but in our actions.

It is time to be that voice we need to impact our world, and create a lasting change we so much desire.

It is time for every Nigerian to stand up to a challenge and say;

I am a Nigerian and my country will not fail in my time. So help me God.
